New York City Police Department maintains stubborn radio silence in face of inquiry seeking clarity on sources of massive rise in felony assaults as compared with 2019. Claimed "main drivers" may be true, but NYPD provides no data to check. City Council Public Safety Committee holding hearing on crime statistics on Sept. 16.

This is not a story of a “horrific murder.” It is not even the story of an “especially vicious” assault. It didn’t happen in the subway; there was no “gunplay” involved.

It’s just what I guess you would call a regular assault on a 75-year-old woman, apparently for having told two people to clean up after their (unleashed) dogs.
