Please first take a thorough look at the kind of original reporting we produce

You’ll notice, first of all, that our stories feature intensive reporting.

We start with a hypothesis that we think will help illuminate the “why” and “why not” questions of public policy. Most frequently, we are obliged to push sources to confront perspectives that those sources haven’t grappled with before (not doing this often leaves you stuck in a framework that does nothing to expand the boundaries of public debate).

That means we need reporters who are highly analytical, who write with clarity and precision, who are not afraid of asking hard questions, who think that it is worth the time to research and who believe that context is important.

Some basic things you need to think about

Do I really want to do a Remapping Debate news article as opposed to a conventional news article? We hope you do, and we think there is a big payoff for readers, but you need to be prepared and determined to overcome lots of resistance from most of the people you will wind up interviewing.

Consider just how long these stories take to report and write. It’s very unusual for one to be brought home in less than three weeks; it can easily take four or five. You need to take that into account when determining the level of compensation you need.

How do you apply?

Use the web form on the right and include a letter that: (1) describes with specificity your interest in doing the type of work in which Remapping Debate specializes; (2) identifies one or more topical areas of interest; (3) includes (preferably by link) a sample or samples of work representative of your portfolio; and (4) provides, in strictest confidence, your compensation requirements.

Remapping Debate is an equal opportunity employer committed to following all federal, state, and local equal employment laws. We affirmatively encourage applications from journalists who are members of one or more protected class groups that have traditionally been under-represented in the news business.
