Split and faithless electors

1

Split electors: Maine and Nebraska award one elector to the winner of each congressional district and two to the statewide winner, so a state’s electors can go to more than one candidate under the rules as written. In the 2008, 2020 and 2024 cycles, one of Nebraska’s five electors went to the Democratic candidate. In the 2016, 2020 and 2024 cycles, one of Maine’s four electors went to the Republican candidate.

Faithless electors: Individual electors who voted for someone other than the candidate that won those electors. Of the cycles reported here, this only happened in 2016. There were two in Texas, four in Washington, and one in Hawaii.

Map treatment: Notwithstanding the above, the number of electors shown for each state on the map represents all of that state’s electors. In the National Popular & Electoral Vote visualization, by contrast, the totals take into account split electors and faithless electors (the latter shown there as “Other”). Map color reflects the certified statewide winner in this view.
